Heather came to us June 26, 2001. She was rescued by Mid America Basset Rescue when they bought her at a Puppy Mill auction. She spent the first 6 1/2 years of her life in a small wire cage whelping litter after litter of puppies and never knew a kind word, or a loving touch. Her body was covered with scars, she had broken teeth and scar tissue where ribs had been broken. She was abused beyond comprehension and carried the emotional scars with her for the rest of her life. Little did she know on the trip home that day in May, her life was about to change for the better! She was going home. The first few weeks Heather was with us, she spent much of her time under the bed. Imagine her suprise to find out Dad had blocked access to underneath the bed and she had to come out and be a part of the family! |

This picture was actually taken several years later. She was keeping me company while I was sewing.
Following are some of the many pictures we have of her that chronicle her growth and change while she was with us. Heather learned to love life, and love people. She would dress up in silly costumes and go to parties where there would be other people and dogs and have a wonderful time!
She especially enjoyed our local Sunfest where she would greet people and play with the children that came by our Basset Club's booth. She became a great Am-Basset-dor for Basset Hounds!
Soon after she came to us, she surprised me by getting on the bed instead of under it! |
Playpose. She loved to play once she learned how! |
Just darned cute. |
Her first ornery stunt - she shredded a bag of cotton balls. She was always too fearful to try most things. I was so proud of her! |
She could sit up for the longest time! |
Stylin'! Heather and her new pink hoody |
The Christmas Tree was her back scratcher. She rocked her rear end back and forth to scratch it on the branches. |
At Dawg Days - it was so hot! She was the first one in the pool to cool off and loved it! |
Cheery Heather! Boomer Sooner!!! Heather loved this costume and the attention she drew. She grinned all day! |
Our Girls Heather and Honey |
Heather and the bird bath. My all time favorite picture. |
Heather seldom got on the furniture, so it was surprising when she did. Dad was even home when she got on this chair! |
If I'm at the computer, she was at my feet under my desk. |
Belly Up! This was a true gift.
